WHAT IS THE ASQ AND ASQ:SE?

The ASQ and ASQ–SE are a series of questions for each growth period designed to check intellectual and emotional development from Birth to 5 years of age.

1. The Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) looks at children’s development in five key areas:

  • Communication Skills
  • Gross Motor Skills
  • Fine Motor Skills
  • Problem–Solving Skills
  • Personal–Social Skills

2. The Ages and Stages Social–Emotional Questionnaire (ASQ:SE) follows up on the emotional and social development of your child. It measures how well your child interacts with others and adapts to new and varying situations.

Alberta Health Services is also using the ASQ and ASQ–SE for developmental screening at check–ups for children 6 and 18 months.
If you have missed doing this screen please take advantage of doing one online instead and if you want, leave a note so we can tell them this option works!.

WHEN TO DO THE ASQ:

There are a total of 19 ASQs and 8 ASQ:SEs.

You DO NOT need to go through all of them with your child. It is recommended that you do 1 or 2 questionnaires per year until they reach the age of five.

You may choose to do more if developmental delays are identified.

HOW AND WHERE TO DO THE ASQ:

The ASQ are activities that you DO with your child that help you to answer the questions.

You can do it at home where you and your child are most COMFORTABLE.
Help is available by phoning (403) 854–8800 or your local coordinator (see middle panel)

WHO DOES THE ASQ? YOU Do!

Parents are experts about their children, no one can do the ASQ with your kids as well as YOU!
